Go Green: Carbon Neutral
We have all heard of the concept of a “carbon footprint”, and how important it is to keep carbon emissions as low as possible. Even so, many people don’t know why carbon is such a big problem, or what “carbon emissions” actually are. So, here is the truth behind the top 3 myths about carbon emissions.
Myth 1 – “Carbon footprint” means the amount of carbon you use.
Truth – When we talk about carbon emissions we might not be talking about carbon at all!
Carbon emissions are the greenhouse gasses released into the atmosphere by a specific process. The main emission is carbon dioxide, most of which is generated from burning fossil fuels, but others include methane from agriculture processes and fluorinated gasses from refrigerants. To make things simpler, all the different gasses are referred to by their equivalent in carbon, which lets you easily compare one number across different industries.
Myth 2 – Plants need CO2 to survive, if it’s a natural substance it can’t be that harmful.
Truth – It’s not the carbon dioxide itself that’s the problem, it’s that we have far too much of it.
Plants need carbon dioxide, in fact forests absorb and store huge amounts of it! The problem is that we are producing vast amounts, and at the same time we are cutting down forests. The remaining plants simply can’t keep up. In fact, our atmosphere now has the highest levels of carbon dioxide (and other greenhouse gasses) in 800,000 years!
The Earth’s atmosphere acts a little like a blanket, or a greenhouse. Heat from the sun hits the Earth and the atmosphere keeps some of that in, letting the rest radiate into space. The balance of different gasses in our atmosphere keeps the Earth at just the right temperature for us all to survive.
When greenhouse gasses alter the Earth’s atmosphere it’s like swapping a thin blanket for a thick duvet. Too much heat is trapped inside and the Earth starts to warm up, giving us global warming and endangering the whole world.
Myth 3 – It’s too late to do anything to help.
Truth – It’s not too late, but we do need to act now.
According to the World Wildlife Fund,“The technology and systems we need to move to 100% renewable energy by 2045 and use our planet’s resources sustainably are already available.”
What we need now is a willingness to make a change, to put those technologies and systems into practice. There are two main groups of people who are often called on to make that change, politicians and business leaders. We may not be able to do much about politics, but as a business that truly cares about the world we live in, we are very proud to say that Gemar is meeting this challenge head on.
We have reduced our carbon footprint, but we haven’t stopped at becoming carbon neutral. Instead, Gemar has achieved a negative CO2 balance! This means that the whole process, from the rubber plantation to the moment the balloons leave the factory, actually saves 29.09 tons of carbon for each ton of Gemar balloons.
We are actually contributing to reversing climate change.
At Gemar we often say we want to spread joy and lift every moment. This isn’t just a catchphrase, it’s something that means a lot to us and we think that helping to end global warming is a wonderful way to spread joy around the world and into the future.
If we all do our part, we can make a difference.
